Carmelite Monastery of Santa Fe
We are a traditional community of Discalced Carmelite Nuns living the charism of
Our Holy Mother St. Teresa of Jesus.
Our monastery is situated in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on the high desert of northern New Mexico. This environment echoes the spirit of Elijah the Prophet and our Order's first founders who lived in the 12th century on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. The landscape and our lifestyle complement one another in rugged simplicity. Santa Fe has been our home for 72 years.
Our Carmel is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Teresa. The day is permeated with the presence of the Carmelites who have gone before us: particularly Saint John of the Cross, Saint Therese the Little Flower, and Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity. We see ourselves as a vine planted by Saint Teresa herself with roots that actually go back to Spain.
Throughout the day we strive to live a balanced life as so noble a Mother designed - one of silence and solitude, of public prayer and private, of work and community in a Bethany where Our Lord may rest among those who have chosen the better part.
You will attain a good "feel" for the Carmel of Santa Fe by viewing the slideshow/video below.
We live in fidelity to the Magisterium of Holy Mother Church and gratefully enjoy the privilege of papal enclosure. If you believe that God is calling you to the heights of Mount Carmel through the evangelical counsels of obedience, chastity and poverty, you are invited to enter into discernment with us. We entrust you into the care of Our Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
